The Transportation Program began in 1976 with the purchase of a 12-passenger van. Initially, it provided limited rural transit, helping citizens reach appointments in Circleville, as well as providing transportation for the Homemaker-Home Health Program and occasional doctor’s appointments. This service helped meet the growing needs of our community, offering essential transportation to those who needed it most.
By the mid-1980s, the program expanded into a full-time department, allowing us to serve more residents on a regular basis. As demand increased, so did our commitment to providing safe, reliable, and accessible transportation for individuals and families throughout the area.
In 1992, we introduced the first-ever Pumpkin Show shuttle, using two transit buses to help attendees get to and from the annual event with ease. This service quickly became a valued tradition, ensuring that everyone could enjoy one of our community’s most cherished celebrations.
The department launched Dial-A-Ride, a cab-like service designed to offer flexible and convenient transportation, that eventually evolved into the system’s current Demand Response service. In the 2000s we added a point deviation city bus route (Flex Bus) to serve more residents efficiently.
Today, PICCA Transit employs a dedicated team of a dozen employees and operates 15 vehicles, providing over 20,000 trips per year. Our mission remains the same: to connect people with the places they need to go, ensuring accessibility and independence for all members of our community.
